Hello world!

May 24, 2011

Several years ago I wrote a book entitled More Bricks Less Straw which was based upon the premise that we could get more done with less (people) if we did a better job of leading.  If we created and nurtured an environment that moved people from compliance to commitment we could execute more quickly thus increasing our productivity.  At that time, it was my premise that we needed to do this because people deserved to be treated better but also from a practical perspective an aging workforce would soon be retiring and the number of available, skilled workers would not match up with the number of jobs needing to be filled.  It seems I was wrong.  Declining economic conditions as well as declining 401K’s and disappearing pensions have diminished the number of retirees and the number of available jobs at the same time.  The current economic conditions have had the same effect on our organizations; expecting smaller teams to do the work that was done before.  Expecting more throughput with less staff seems to be the new normal.  Which leads me to believe that More Bricks Less Straw and the strategies related to it is a timely concept that is worth exploring.  We’ll see.  Ultimately you will be the judge.
